Which diets work best after giving birth?

BX Bunny asked:

I want to lose the baby weight while I’m breastfeeding. I’m hoping that my body will use my stored fat to make milk. From experience, which diets work best for this? I want my milk to be good for the baby, so I can’t go on any diets that cut out food groups completely.

Any books or websites with the diet plans on them would be helpful :) I’m trying to read up before I give birth!

i’m sorry but that’s not true at all. you need to be eating healthy while breastfeeding, drink a lot of water, and your going to **** this one, but you actually will need to intake more calories while breastfeeding, if you don’t get enough, you wont produce as much milk. so basically, you can’t be on a diet while breastfeeding, good thing, breastfeeding burns cals and makes you lose weight fast.

Forget the diet. Get an exercise ball. They are awesome for soothing the baby, you sit on it, hold the baby for gentle bouncing – double duty you get exercise in.

Also, this is just my scheme (id ask your doc on it) – you could also just supplementally pump – and freeze it. Then you’d have the milk for when your baby weaned, and lose that 40cal per ounce. I wouldnt attempt this though until you get in a good routine, maybe even the 5 month mark, right before solids come in at 6 months. Also you never know how the baby will sleep, you could be dead tired, just remember to put the baby and your health – and sanity first, the baby weight can come off later. It can sometimes be easier for some women, based on the temperment of their baby. You just never know.

I have to agree with the first answerer, sorry (And so does the book “what to expect when you’re expecting)
You actually need to increase your intake of calories.
There is no real specific diet anyone would recommend doing at this time, just eat healthy, and do light exercise when you can.

And plus, with a newborn and the subsequent sleep deprivation, you probably wont have the energy to count calories!
Look after bubs, and yourself first.
Baby weight can come off at a later time.

Weight Watchers has a program for nursing women. I did it last time and it worked well.

Don’t go on a diet – instead adopt a healthy eating plan and drink TONS of water. Both you and your baby need a balanced diet with lots of healthy, good for you foods.

If you are really concerned, talk to a dietician or nutritionist. In fact, it might be worthwhile doing this now so that you can start to prepare meals to freeze for when you get home from the hospital and have no time / energy / inclination to cook!!!
